Welcome
to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering,
University of Crete

What Materials Science and Technology is:

  • Materials Science studies the relationship between the structure and properties of materials. Materials Technology uses this relationship to develop new/advanced materials.
  • Materials Science and Technology has elements from across the STEM discipline, and combines Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science.
  • It is science of the future. Most technological advances are associated with the development of new or advanced materials.
  • It has a very broad field of study: biomaterials, photonic materials, polymers, optoelectronic materials, ceramics, metals, semiconductors, metamaterials, nanomaterials, magnetic materials, etc.
  • It has a huge range of applications: food, plastics, paints, textiles, cosmetics, detergents, metals, medicine, ceramics, electronic devices/transistors, optical fibers, photovoltaics, LEDs and many more.

Why should I study Materials Science at the University of Crete?

  • Our University is ranked first in research among Greek Universities.
  • Our Department is included in the leading Materials Science Departments in the world, has collaborations with departments from the largest universities internationally, and a close connection with FORTH, the largest research institution in Greece.
  • The Department is located in Heraklion, a vibrant city with an intense student life.
  • After the degree there is the possibility of postgraduate studies in many postgraduate programs at Universities in Greece but also at the largest Universities in the world, in a wide range of fields.
  • Our graduates are employed in companies, enterprises, public sector in matters of research, development, control, certification, standardization of all categories of materials.
  • The Department’s Degree is part of the Environment branch of the National Qualifications Register. Our graduates have the possibility of being appointed to relevant positions in the wider public sector.
