Short Curriculum Vitae

Georgios Vlastos graduated in 1984 from the Physics Department of the University of Crete. He obtained his Ph.D in1997 from Humboldt University at Berlin, Germany, where he worked on the rheological properties of blood flow and blood viscoelasticity. In 1998 he worked as postdoctoral researcher at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, IL on the clinical applications of blood rheology focused on the prognostic value of blood viscosity and viscoelasticity for cardiovascular diseases. In 2000 he investigated at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, GA, the effects of mechanical forces on vascular cells and the production of reactive oxygen species which are important mediators of vascular inflammation, gene expression and apoptosis, leading to hypertension and atherosclerosis. In 2002 he worked on the field of stem cell research at GSF-Research Center for Environment and Health in Munich, Germany, investigating the biology of endothelial progenitor cells and their therapeutic use against atherosclerosis and cancer. In 2005 he continued his research on stem cell biology at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, FORTH in Crete, Greece. Since 2007 he is Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Technology of the University of Crete, where he is teaching courses in Bioengineering. He is reviewer for the scientific Journal "Biorheology".
