Anyone who holds a postgraduate degree awarded by a Higher Educational Institution (HEI) in Greece or abroad or a graduate of an undergraduate degree program of a HEI in Greece or abroad, the successful completion of which leads to the award of a single and indivisible degree in accordance with article 78 of Law 4957/2022, has the right to apply for registration in the doctoral studies program.

The right to apply for a doctoral thesis is granted to holders of a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies (MSc) from a higher education institution in Greece or a recognized equivalent degree from a foreign country or an integrated postgraduate degree (Integrated Master).

Tuition fees: Doctoral studies at the Department are offered free of charge.

Application procedure

The application form is completed in a series of documents available from the Secretariat for Postgraduate Studies of the Department and from the website of the Department. The supporting documents to be submitted with the application to be considered complete is:

  1. Completed application containing:
    1. The proposed title of the doctoral dissertation.
    2. Brief summary of the subject to be addressed by the doctoral dissertation.
    3. The language of preparation and writing of the Doctoral Thesis (Greek or English).
    4. The proposed supervisor and two members of the doctoral dissertation whose subject or scientific work is relevant to that of the doctoral dissertation.
  2. Copies of diplomas.
  3. Transcript of study certificates.
  4. Copies of English language titles or other certificates.
  5. Detailed CV of the candidate.
  6. At least two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly by the authors electronically to the Department. Letters of recommendation are confidential and are not disclosed by the Department to candidates under any circumstances, either before or after their eventual admission.
  7. Solemn declaration that he/she does not simultaneously prepare another Doctoral Thesis in a Greek or foreign University.
  8. Any supporting information that candidates consider will help to evaluate their application more fully.

If the application is accepted, a prerequisite for enrollment in the PhD program is the presentation of certified copies of the degrees or certificates of recognition of studies and all other supporting documents.

Submission deadlines

There are no specific submission periods. Those interested, after coming into direct contact and consultation with the proposed Supervisor and then with the other members of the proposed three-member advisory committee, can proceed with their application to the Department.

Application evaluation procedure

The evaluation of applications is carried out by the Postgraduate Studies Committee of the Department. The Assembly of the Department, after taking into account the recommendation of the committee and the opinion of the proposed supervisor, approves or rejects the candidate’s application.
