Abstract Perovskites are a class of semiconducting materials with great interest in optoelectronic applications due to their high efficiency, high absorption coefficients and low cost. Two-dimensional (2D) perovskite structures provide the ability to further tune these properties and manufacture high-performance devices . In this work, we focus on the synthesis and characterization of a new homologous series of 2D layered lead halide perovskites based on the CH3NH3PbBr3 bulk perovskite. The homologous series, with general formula (CH3(CH2)5NH3)2(CH3NH3)n-1PbnBr3n+1, where n corresponds to the number of layers of the perovskite, produces a fertile ground for the study of quantum wells, since the alternating organic and inorganic layers generate a natural, periodic quantum well structure . By tuning the thickness, we control the degree of dielectric and quantum confinement of the photogenerated carriers inside the inorganic layers, thus creating a series of compounds with tunable optical properties in the visible spectrum range. The compounds were synthesized in pure form and their crystal structure was determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural phase transitions were monitored via Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) in the -80 – 120 oC temperature range while the optical properties were studied via steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in the -195- 25 oC temperature range. The results suggest that the new compounds are excellent excitonic model systems and can be employed in specific applications like LEDs and lasers.

2D halide perovskite semiconductors have shown a variety of applications in recent years, mainly in photovoltaics, attracting a plethora of scientists to this developing multidisciplinary field. The primary goal for this Thesis, is to further exploring the field, by synthesizing new 2D hybrid halide perovskites and trying to optimize certain aspects of the crystal and electronic band structure. Towards this end, the new organic diammonium spacer (2-halo, 1,3-diammino propane, DicX, X = Br, I) was introduced, in an attempt to examine the effect of the organic halide in the photophysical properties of the layered perovskites. The new spacer was employed towards the synthesis of the 2D homologous series (DicI)(CH3NH3)n-1PbnI3n+1(n = 1-3) as well as the synthesis of members of the corresponding 2D lead-free compounds based on ordered double perovskites combining Ag+ and Bi3+ double perovskites.

As it was shown from optical measurements in the visible range, new compounds exhibit stable excitons at room temperature emitting in the wavelength range λ = 500-650 nm consistent with their Multiple Quantum Well electronic structure. However, unlike other derivatives of the 2D perovskites, the binding energy of the materials appears to be significantly reduced, as a result of the organic spacer. The extra organ iodide in the spacer reduces the dielectric contrast between the organic and the inorganic components whereas the interlayer distance between the perovskite sheets is significantly reduced from the short carbon chain. As band structure calculations also support, the new materials effectively behave as bulk perovskites, resulting in a charge-transport in all three dimensions, a property that may have great impact in the application of these materials in solar cells. In an attempt to take advantage of this property, thin films of these layered 2D halide perovskites were fabricated and characterized. Future work on these materials will deal with the manufacture and characterization of full solar cells devices, where it is anticipated that we will be able to obtain a significant increase in the photo-generated current which may lead to an overall improved power-conversion efficiency.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities escalate the greenhouse effect, causing climate change. Confronting climate change requires accurate measurements of GHG emissions.

This work aims to optimize a ground-based, integrated path, differential absorption (IPDA) light detection device for GHG (CO2 and CH4) detection and monitoring that already has been developed and tested. The laser beam of the IPDA device was modulated using a rotating optical chopper that produces fluctuations in the recorded signal. By processing them with a Lock-In amplifier the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is reduced. In this work, the mechanical chopper was replaced by the laser beam modulation by changing the current of the laser controller.

In that case, rapid changes in the laser current produce undesirable changes in the laser wavelength. To investigate this effect, the optimum parameters of the laser driver for laser modulation were defined using a cell filled with GHG. Finally, the upgraded system was used to measure the background concentrations of CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere. These measurements were used to determine the accuracy and reliability of the system.

Crocidura zimmermanni and Crocidura suaveolens are insectivorous mammals belonging to the extant shrew fauna of Crete. In particular, the C. zimmermanni has probably been present since the early Pleistocene. C. suaveolens, a species recently (i.e. in historical times) introduced to Crete, has constrained C. zimmermanni to the higher altitudes of the island. The lack of clear external morphological characters has caused a long history of confusion between the two. Within the framework of this thesis, we will employ high-resolution Computed Tomography (CT) imaging, aiming at finding distinctive characters between the two shrews through the acquisition of morphological information from skull bones and teeth. The recorded 3D reconstructions of the skull will provide precise assessments of the molar length, the jaw width as measured between the first and second molar, and the condylomaxillary length between the canine and the third molar. Furthermore, we are planning to determine the height of the cingulum above the end of the teeth in the investigated mammals. Each of the characters mentioned, or their combination, may allow for a safe distinction between the two species. The rapid and inexpensive morphological examination through CT is expected to provide additional evidence as regards the reliable classification of the animals, complementing the state-of-the-art molecular analysis methods.

Among the numerous applications protein-polymer conjugates are expected to find in material sciences, their potential to enhance the activity of enzymes or differentiate it on demand is of particular interest. Primary goal of this Thesis was to explore the synthesis of protein-polymer conjugates by grafting polymers from the unspecific AaeUPO peroxygenase, a protein isolated from the fungus Agrocybe aegerita. A variety of monomers were used to synthesize hydrophilic, hydrophobic and responsive bioconjugates via controlled radical polymerization approaches. AaeUPO bioconjugates were characterized with spectroscopy (NMR, IR) and chromatography (GPC, electrophoresis). Preliminary studies (NMR spectroscopy) allowed to correlate the activity of the biohybrid with that of the native AaeUPO peroxygenase.
