Περίληψη

Among the numerous applications protein-polymer conjugates are expected to find in material sciences, their potential to enhance the activity of enzymes or differentiate it on demand is of particular interest. Primary goal of this Thesis was to explore the synthesis of protein-polymer conjugates by grafting polymers from the unspecific AaeUPO peroxygenase, a protein isolated from the fungus Agrocybe aegerita. A variety of monomers were used to synthesize hydrophilic, hydrophobic and responsive bioconjugates via controlled radical polymerization approaches. AaeUPO bioconjugates were characterized with spectroscopy (NMR, IR) and chromatography (GPC, electrophoresis). Preliminary studies (NMR spectroscopy) allowed to correlate the activity of the biohybrid with that of the native AaeUPO peroxygenase.

International Congress on Rheology

We are pleased to invite you to participate at the XIXth International Congress on Rheology (ICR2023), in Athens, Greece, from July 29th to August 4th, 2023.

For those who shall not attend the International Congress on Rheology in Athens, a virtual attendance option is available at a reduced rate.

The plenary lectures, as well as five of the fifteen conference sessions will be available through virtual means.

The following sessions will be available virtually:

  1. Plenaries (including Weissenberg and Bingham lectures) and awards session (Oldroyd, Metzner)
  2. Polymeric materials (melts, solutions, copolymers, blends, composites). This includes the Tom McLeish memorial session.
  3. Supramolecular and self-assembling systems, associating polymers, polyelectrolytes, synthetic and biological networks
  4. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics
  5. Suspensions, frictional and granular systems
  6. Arrested matter : gels, glasses and jammed systems

Περίληψη

In the broader context of efforts towards a sustainable world, great emphasis is currently being placed on emerging technologies that are not only cost-effective, but also adaptable to a wide range of applications. The investigation of dielectric properties is a topic of continuously increasing interest, as it is inextricably linked to a multitude of technological applications in the field of photonics, electrical insulating materials as well as active dielectric materials. The precise determination, as well as the potential correlation of these properties is a prerequisite for the successful design and development of innovative technological materials with predefined, desirable properties. The scope of this Master thesis was the fabrication and characterization of composite dielectric materials, which in this case was achieved through the incorporation of Barium Titanate (ΒaΤiΟ3), a predominantly environmentally friendly dielectric material, within a commercially available polymeric material such as Silicone. Central to this concept, was the construction of flexible samples with enhanced mechanical and dielectric properties, whereas attention was also drawn to the behavior of the dielectric properties of these materials when subjected to both constant as well as cyclic mechanical loading.

Chromatin Conformations and Dynamics Induced by Loop Extrusion

Περίληψη

The loop extrusion model describes the organization of chromatin into dynamic loops by protein complexes such as cohesin. We developed a theoretical model that quantifies how key parameters, including cohesin residence time on chromatin, extrusion velocity, and the number density of chromatin-bound cohesins, regulate genomic contacts. The model describes chromatin contact probabilities and predicts that loop formation probability is a nonmonotonic function of loop length. The dynamics extension of our theory demonstrates that active loop extrusion causes the apparent fractal dimension of chromatin to cross over between 2 and 4 at approximately 100 kilo-base pairs. Furthermore, the model describes how extrusion stretches chromatin regions directly adjacent to loops and causes anomalous dynamics of chromatin-bound cohesins. This work provides a theoretical basis for the compact organization of interphase chromatin and explains suppression of chromatin entanglements.
